Spend the morning at the world-famous Panda Base, a facility dedicated to conservation, research, and education. The cool, misty morning is when the pandas are most lively—feeding, climbing, and playing.

Expert Guided Tour (2.5-3 hours): Your guide will lead you to the best viewing areas. Learn about the differences between giant pandas and the smaller red pandas, the challenges of breeding, and the Base’s successful efforts to increase the population.

Why is it so important to visit the Panda Base in the morning?

Giant pandas are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon hours. By arriving at opening time (8:00 AM), you maximize your chances of seeing them awake, moving around, and feeding. After about 10:30 AM, they often become lethargic and sleep for most of the day.

Can I hold or hug a panda?

No. For the safety and well-being of both the animals and visitors, holding a panda is not permitted at the Chengdu Panda Base. The experience you will have is observing them in large, naturalistic enclosures. (Some private conservation centers outside Chengdu offer “panda keeper” programs for a fee, but this is a separate and much more expensive experience).

Do I need to bring my passport?

Yes, it is required. Your passport is needed to purchase entrance tickets for foreign visitors at the Panda Base.

What should I wear and bring?

The Panda Base is a large, outdoor area with paved paths and some hills. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a bottle of water. The weather in Chengdu is often humid.

Is the food very spicy? What if I can't handle spicy food?

Sichuan cuisine is famous for its bold, spicy, and numbing flavors (thanks to the Sichuan peppercorn). However, not all food is intensely spicy. Your guide will help you order a balanced lunch with both flavorful and milder options. Please communicate your preference clearly.

What is the best time of year to see panda cubs?

The best chance to see tiny newborn panda cubs is typically between August and December. However, the nursery has pandas of various ages year-round, and they are adorable at every stage!
